This introductory course is for engineers and technical staff working with audio and acoustics in a telecommunication or speech communication context. It will be of use to those involved directly in audio design, those interfacing with audio designers, or those seeking to increase their understanding of acoustics.

The two day course is supported by comprehensive materials delivered on CD-ROM. Although these course notes include a rigorous mathematical treatment, the course is practical and informal, presented in a manner intended to deepen understanding and to develop intuition.

The course has been presented to delegates from wireless chipset manufacturers and terminal manufacturers at locations from across Europe. This advanced course is intended for those working in telephone audio as acoustic engineers, analog baseband engineers, software engineers or system architects.

The course examines the audio performance required of modern mobile telephones, bringing clarity to what can be arcane specifications. It highlights the issues of physical acoustics and electro-acoustics that complicate the performance of telephone systems and helps delegates develop sufficient intuition for psychoacoustics to place the objective requirements of telephone audio into context. Most importantly, the course focuses upon tuning; explaining what is required to produce and configure a system capable of meeting the requirements of standards such as 3GPP TS 26.131. In so doing, it touches upon aspects of instrumentation and upon the measurement systems used in modern telephonometry.

Whilst the course can be delivered in general terms, added value emerges when the course is customized to focus on the details of a particular chipset or form factor. Customized versions of the course are developed to order, under NDA, at additional cost.

The important concepts of DSP are illustrated by simulations in MATLAB, by details of implementation on contemporary DSP specific microprocessors and by the opportunity to code and run DSP algorithms on DSP evaluation boards in a "hands on" session.
